STAR WARS: DAWN OF DEFIANCE
EPISODE I: THE TRAITOR'S GAMBIT

It's been a pretty impressive day for the lot of you, all in all. You managed to rescue an rebel informant sealed in a block of carbonite, taking down some alarmingly tough Imperial Navy Recruits along the way. You escaped from Sel Zonn with the aid of Sirona O'Keefe, captain of the luxury craft named the Banshee and made your way to Alderaan.

Far more peaceul and welcoming than most of the worlds you've been inhabiting since the end of the Clone Wars, the three of you were invited to an audience with Alderaan's most prominent figure, Senator Bail Organa. Seeking your help, he spoke of an Imperial Officer disillusioned with the Empire who is currently being held in a secret holding facility on a distant and untamed planet - Felucia. Agreeing to the mission, you found yourself 2,000 credits richer and with time to burn until departing from Alderaan to Felucia onboard the Banshee.

The rest of the day was uneventful, with Col sending droids to the ship with exquisite food and drink - you were mostly confined to the Banshee for now - as neither the Senator or his allies wanted any further link between you and the Alderaanian Resistance until you managed to pull off the rescue. The Banshee's dormitories are luxurious and the sleep you managed to acquire was a good one, filled with happy dreams and restful thoughts.

The journey from Alderaan to Felucia was devoid of trouble, as was to be expected. The holodisk you scanned through to get information on your mission showed Felucia as an out-of-the way jungle world where massive mushrooms dominate the landscape. The native Felucians retreated into hiding years ago when Gossam colonists first invaded.

Though the fierce battles of the Clone Wars made their way to the planet eventually, Felucia was left largely unscathed, and with the defeat of the Separatist forces the newly created Empire mostly withdrew from the system. What Imperial presence of Felucia is still left is focused primarily around protecting the small prison facility left on the world. The few cities on Felucia have Imperial garrisions, and the Gossam colonist that still remain have to deal with Imperial persecution there. However, you won't be going anywhere near the cities. The prison facility, which does not exist on any official maps, is located deep in the Felucian jungle. If not for the Alderaanian Security agent you rescued, no one wwould have any knowledge of the facility's location. The Banshee has the coordinates in its nav computer and Crash is piloting a course that should bring the ship out of hyperspace on the side of the planet nearest to the prison facility.

At dawn the next day, Sirona ignites the repulsors on the ship and takes you into orbit above Alderaan before jumping into hyperspace. Ten hours later, Crash sets about collecting you and essentially herding you towards the cockpit, where Sirona sits staring at a hologram of the Felucia. Behind her in the windows of the cockpit is the flashing blue of hyperspace whizzing by.

[Fri Mar 12 22:12:14 2010] : (445) GM Talespinner: (let me know when you guys are done)
[Fri Mar 12 22:12:36 2010] : (448) Dexen: (Paeaceul)
[Fri Mar 12 22:14:02 2010] : ** (447) Pahner trots out to the cockpit and takes a seat. **
[Fri Mar 12 22:14:30 2010] : (448) Dexen: *heads into the cockpit, fiddling with the new, bigger, badder weaponry on his belt*
[Fri Mar 12 22:15:01 2010] : (437) Yana: *follows the others, glancing out the windows*
[Fri Mar 12 22:15:03 2010] : (445) GM Talespinner: "Evenin'," the older woman swivels the pilot's chair around to face you, the corners of her lips upturned in a slight smile. "We should be arriving in Felucia in an hour or so, I wanted to make sure we had our plans all on the same page..."
[Fri Mar 12 22:17:27 2010] : (437) Yana: "right. Little stroll in the woods. No problem."
[Fri Mar 12 22:17:51 2010] : (447) Pahner: "Noted. Direct assault is out"
[Fri Mar 12 22:18:34 2010] : (445) GM Talespinner: : "Heh," Sirona gins, "A little stroll is right."

Zooming in on the holo, she points to a long and deep canyon that cuts across reasonably close to the facility.

We can enter here, out of the facilitys sensor range she says, pointing to the far end of the canyon. Tracing the long canyon around the horizon, she says, The canyon should hide us from their sensors on our approach. Well put down here, at the closest point to the prison. Ill wait there for your transmission. You can bring him back by foot. Or if you can find some way to shut down the cannons I should be able to land on the roof and take you out that way.

[Fri Mar 12 22:18:41 2010] : (448) Dexen: "little stroll in the horrible, sentient-eating jungle."*corrective tone*
[Fri Mar 12 22:18:52 2010] : (445) GM Talespinner: (Sigh, farewell, quotation maks - wherever you've gone.)
[Fri Mar 12 22:19:26 2010] : (447) Pahner: "Distance from landing point to facility?"
[Fri Mar 12 22:19:47 2010] : (445) GM Talespinner: "Dexen has the right of it," Sirona nods. "There's a reason why Felucia is mostly uncolonized. The planet almost seems to resist efforts to do so."
[Fri Mar 12 22:20:20 2010] : (445) GM Talespinner: "I'd estimate about a four hour walk - that's without taking into account the vegetation and terrain."
[Fri Mar 12 22:20:35 2010] : (448) Dexen: "lightsaber makes a hell of a machete."
[Fri Mar 12 22:21:15 2010] : (447) Pahner: "Hmm. What is the nearest Imperial Fleet presence, if any nearby, and how long for a reaction force to arrive?"
[Fri Mar 12 22:21:34 2010] : (447) Pahner: "Once the shooting starts, we might not have time to trek out to exfiltration point"
[Fri Mar 12 22:22:13 2010] : (445) GM Talespinner: "Only what the facility and outlying outposts have," Sirona shrugs. "This base is a well-guarded secret and is far enough from any major outpost that other Imperial presence on the planet shouldn't be a problem."
[Fri Mar 12 22:22:45 2010] : (445) GM Talespinner: "As for the Fleet - let's hope there isn't any when we come out of hyperspace - or we'll all be in big trouble. Like I said, the Banshee is not an assault ship."
[Fri Mar 12 22:23:32 2010] : (447) Pahner: "Nearest garrison to facility, distance? And do they have landspeeders, if we have the info?"
[Fri Mar 12 22:24:14 2010] : (447) Pahner: "I'm trying to figure out if we need to take out their comm center or not. And if we will be forced to disable the facility defenses for our escape"
[Fri Mar 12 22:24:25 2010] : (445) GM Talespinner: "Landspeeders? Most likely. The nearest garrison is at least a day away - even by speeder bike."
[Fri Mar 12 22:24:49 2010] : ** (447) Pahner makes a dour face. "Besides, no offense M'am, but all plans break at first contact with the enemy" **
[Fri Mar 12 22:24:53 2010] : (448) Dexen: "i doubt we have much to worry about in the way of backup, pahner... this place is probably so secret that the guards won't even be paying attention."
[Fri Mar 12 22:25:12 2010] : (447) Pahner: "Very well, that would be too far for help to arrive swiftly."
[Fri Mar 12 22:25:31 2010] : (447) Pahner: "We will plan on getting the admiral out on foot to exfiltration point"
[Fri Mar 12 22:25:56 2010] : (448) Dexen: "disabling the roof turrets shouldn't be too hard if we've got control of the facility."
[Fri Mar 12 22:26:03 2010] : (445) GM Talespinner: "Disabling the comm center may or may not be a good idea - reports indicate that the primary relay is some distance away from the facility, about two miles southeast. But - the vegetation on this planet seems to interfere with comm traffic - it requires a much larger signal than the ones you have to transmit."
[Fri Mar 12 22:26:44 2010] : (447) Pahner: "If possible, I'd say taking over the facility or at least disabling the turrets, would be very advantageous."
[Fri Mar 12 22:26:55 2010] : (447) Pahner: "What is the size of the garrison at the prison facility?"
[Fri Mar 12 22:27:18 2010] : (445) GM Talespinner: "Perhaps, but the resistance has no desire to establish a foothold on Felucia. It's just not cost-feasible."
[Fri Mar 12 22:28:09 2010] : (445) GM Talespinner: "Preliminary estimates put the size of the garrison around 20 members of the Imperial Army, with a few high ranking officers."
[Fri Mar 12 22:28:12 2010] : (447) Pahner: "Also, should the opportunity arise, should be bother releasing the rest of the prisoners, if we find any others?"
[Fri Mar 12 22:28:43 2010] : (437) Yana: "Probably depends on the prisoners."
[Fri Mar 12 22:29:01 2010] : ** (447) Pahner grunts. "Ideally I'd want an entire squad for this, but we'll have to make do. Surprise should help" **
[Fri Mar 12 22:29:03 2010] : (445) GM Talespinner: "Well, this ship can hold up to 10 people comfortably, including us. And, yes, as Mistress Yana said, it depends on the prisoners."
[Fri Mar 12 22:29:43 2010] : (437) Yana: *smiles slightly* "could just end up giving ourselves more headaches."
[Fri Mar 12 22:30:23 2010] : (447) Pahner: "Very well. We will have to adjust to conditions in the field. We can consider that a potential secondary objective. Primary objective - remove admiral to exfiltration point. Secondary objectives - deactivate turret roof defense systems, release additional prisoners"
[Fri Mar 12 22:30:43 2010] : ** (447) Pahner studies the holo more closely. **
[Fri Mar 12 22:31:00 2010] : (447) Pahner: "Any outlying bunkers, or sensor drones, sentry stations, and so on?"
[Fri Mar 12 22:31:44 2010] : (445) GM Talespinner: "None," Sirona shugs at Pahner, "Save for the comm tower. Like I said, it is out-of-the-way because secrecy is of the highest priority."
[Fri Mar 12 22:32:47 2010] : (447) Pahner: "I would suggest that comm tower be the initial point of contact. If we can take it out swiftly, we buy ourselves more type"
[Fri Mar 12 22:34:17 2010] : (445) GM Talespinner: Sirona shrugs, "You guys are the ones doing the grunt work - I'm just your pilot. Whatever you decide is fine with me."
[Fri Mar 12 22:34:47 2010] : (445) GM Talespinner: "...though I'd like to keep my ship intact, if at all possible."

With that, the blue tunnel of hyperspace fades away and the pinpoints of stars fill the windows of the Banshee, you get a brief glimpse of the planet Felucia hanging just below your ship, mostly covered with clouds - though the flashes of land you see below are a dark green.

With an expert's hand, Sirona sends the ship down towards the atmosphere of the planet. As you pass through the thin cloud layer, you get a good look at the fungal swamps and jungles of the planet, where towering mushrooms reach up into the air like skyscrapers. It has a grim beauty to it, bright colors dot what is otherwise a hostile world.

[Fri Mar 12 22:55:08 2010] : (455) GM Talespinner: : As the Banshee reaches the surface of the planet, Captain O'Keefe maneuvers the ship into a nearby canyon, guiding the Banshee expertly through as it levels out its descent. You feel the transport lurch slightly as the ship skids across a layer of large fungal growth before settling down into a clear spot in the mushroom jungle.

[Fri Mar 12 23:01:12 2010] : (455) GM Talespinner: : Your first steps onto the soil of Felucia make it clear that this planet is truly alive. The air smells fertile and you can see fragrant wafts of pollens streaming from bulging stamens. The landscape is bizarre. The membranous vegetation around you is translucent, oversized, and coloured brightly. It is hot and humid, and insects fly and crawl everywhere. Massive mushrooms tower overhead, their overhanging edges creating a canopy that blocks out the planet's sunlight. The noise of the jungle is loud and alien, full of the sounds of hundreds of insects and animals moving through a vibrant ecosystem.

One particularly colorful flutter-fly, with gossamer wings of blue and green, flits harmlessly around the three of you, seemingly welcoming you to Felucia before swooping up into the sky.

It isn't after two hours of travel that a quick check of your coordinates reveal you've only gone a quater of the way to your destination. Eventually you manage to shove or cut you way past another thick clump of giant mushrooms and step ankle-deep into a boggy marsh.

A few bulbous mushrooms dot the area near you as you continue their trek, the cap of these unusual plants seems to be almost translucent, shimmering in the haze of the jungle. The cap itself appears to contain a large amount of cerulean blue water, and the whole bulb of the fungi undulates with every whisper of Felucia's wind.

[Fri Mar 12 23:34:25 2010] : (455) GM Talespinner: (Ah, there we go.)
[Fri Mar 12 23:34:58 2010] : (455) GM Talespinner: : As you creep close you find the color that peeked out through the foilage to be a suit of the green and off-white armor of the Imperial Army hangs from an primitive effigy, dented in many places and with a brutal cut cross-wise from shoulder to hip. A few animal skulls are hung from the effigy as well - a clear sign of warning.
[Fri Mar 12 23:35:43 2010] : (437) Yana: *raises an eyebrow*
[Fri Mar 12 23:35:46 2010] : (448) Dexen: "....that's... uh."
[Fri Mar 12 23:36:28 2010] : ** (447) Pahner quickly goes over the armor, and checks to see if there is a body inside, and if there are any items or systems still operational in it. **
[Fri Mar 12 23:36:47 2010] : (437) Yana: "maybe we should leave it alone.." *in a hushed tone*
[Fri Mar 12 23:36:51 2010] : (448) Dexen: *glances around the area, ill-at-ease*"looks like the natives are restless."
[Fri Mar 12 23:36:59 2010] : ** (447) Pahner nods. **
[Fri Mar 12 23:37:17 2010] : (455) GM Talespinner: There is no body inside, nor anything worth taking - the armor is badly damaged and heavily marred with dents and jagged cuts.
[Fri Mar 12 23:37:53 2010] : ** (447) Pahner talks in a low voice. "No sign of body. Damage consistent with primitive weapons" **
[Fri Mar 12 23:38:01 2010] : (447) Pahner: "Let's move on"
[Fri Mar 12 23:38:14 2010] : ** That's the Tab key, Dave
[Fri Mar 12 23:38:35 2010] : (448) Dexen: *nods and moves off in their direction of travel*
[Fri Mar 12 23:38:55 2010] : (437) Yana: "creepy.." *follows*
[Fri Mar 12 23:40:20 2010] : (455) GM Talespinner: : As you travel, you spot a few more of the effigy's in the distance, though no sign of the natives. They are all hung in the same way, spaced at random intervals and with no clear sign of a pattern. The cacophony of noise created by insects and other animals makes it nearly impossible to hear the splash of your footsteps through the Felucian swamp.

The open area you walk into resembles a large, shallow pool of water with narrow islands rising from it, looking like stepping stones that are slightly too far apart to jump across. A faint mist hangs over the swampy ground, drifting over the still pool of water. On the center island hangs a towering effigy, four suits of the same scout armor hung facing each direction, all heavily damaged.

[Fri Mar 12 23:45:10 2010] : (455) GM Talespinner: : As you observe the area, the soft splash of water alerts you to the presence of something larger than the insects the dart lazily around you. A long-limbed figure, tall and muscular, and garbed only in a leafy loincloth rises from the muck. A tangle of tendrils around its face make it impossible to see its eyes, and the mud and other foilage plastered to his body almost seems to cause him to blend in seamlessly to the backdrop of the swamp.

Beneath the dripping grime of the swamp, you can make out the bright hues of flourescent tattoo patterns, and in its hands it holds the long, slender form of a rancor's jawbone - razor sharp teeth still as deadly as they were before the massive beast fell to these strange people. On its right shoulder, is the top half of a Imperial Army helmet, worn as a decorative pauldron, a grisly trophy to be sure - but one earned, judging by the heavy dents that mar it. It growls at you, pointing the jawbone in your direction. It barks out several commands in its native tongue, and around you, several more figures rise from the muck.
